LATIN AMERICAN FILM SERIES

The Center for Latin American Studies presents a film series on a particular theme each quarter of the academic year. CLAS faculty specialists in Latin American cinema determine the theme and choose 5 feature films to be shown on alternate Wednesday evenings during the quarter. Graduate students specializing in film/cultural studies serve as film series coordinators. Among their duties is an introduction to each film, covering essential background information on filmmakers, actors, and cultural context. All films in a language other than English have English subtitles. The Latin American Film Series is free and open to the public. Children (accompanied by an adult) and teens are welcome, but discretion is advised as most films are not rated.

O ano em que meus paes saíram de férias /
The Year My Parents Went on Vacation
When 12-year-old Mauro is left to fend for himself when his parents "go on vacation" during the military dictatorship, a classic coming-of-age story unfolds. The boy is left in Bom Retiro, a Jewish and Italian neighborhood, and through the young neighbor Hanna, Mauro makes new friends, cheers for the Brazilian team, and sees the movement of the police and military on the streets while waiting for his parents. Director Cao Hamburger's beautiful and touching story embraces the excitement of the era as the culturally diverse community of São Paulo unites to watch Pele lead his country in winning the World Cup of soccer. Cao Hamburger, 2006, 110’.

Cheiro do ralo / Drained

Lourenço, the owner of a secondhand shop, finds pleasure in taking unfair advantage of customers in financial difficulty. He sees the world as a place in which people, as well as used objects, are for sale, preferably for a low price. He classifies people according to a characteristic or to the object that is offered to them: "the bride", "the gramaphone man", or "the addict." This process of objectifying people will stop when Lourenço has to relate to them using a currency that is strange to him - namely, affection - from characters he imagined were under his control. Lourenço is obliged to reassess his vision of the world. Heitor Dhalia, 2007, 112’.

Não por acaso / Not by Chance
Two control-obsessed characters, Ênio, a traffic control worker, and Pedro, a pool player, find fulfillment in a mathematical mindset that leads them toward the feeling of control they long for. But all is thrown to the winds when both Ênio's ex-wife and Pedro's wife die in a car accident. Pedro meets Lúcia and tries to re-live the same exact moments he once lived with his wife; Ênio is forced to confront his loss through the appearance of his unknown daughter. Eventually however, the two men must decide between their obsessions and the new opportunities life has given them. Philippe Barcinski , 2007, 90’.

A Via Láctea
/ The Milky Way
Heitor, a literature professor, meets and falls in love with Júlia, a young actress. During the course of the movie we see scenes from their relationship where they both love and fight each other. Through the film Heitor is driving around the busy streets of São Paulo trying to reach and reconcile once more with Júlia. This provides an opportunity for the director to interject characters from São Paulo's street environment into the picture, from child beggars to crazy men with guns. The chaotic nature of urban life is contrasted with serene shots of Brazilian country side to further reinforce the impact of environment on personal relationships. The first encounter between Heitor & Júlia takes place at a show by an experimental theatre company. The Milky Way can also be called an experimental and non-conventional movie for those looking for something out of the mainstream. Lina Chamie, 2007, 86’.
