Brazil Global May Program

PROGRAM

The Ohio State Global May study abroad program in Brazil is designed to offer a unique cultural experience for undergraduate students who wish to gain an experience with global diversity by living and learning in a foreign country. This program will introduce students to Brazilian history, culture, society and contemporary issues. Through coursework in the classroom as well as through experiential learning, students will gain a unique perspective of this emerging world power. This program is specifically designed for first and second year students of any major who are interested in learning about the global significance of Brazil.

Several field trips will introduce students to the history and culture of both the south and northeast of Brazil, as well as the natural environment of the areas. There will also be opportunities for students to collaborate, and interact with Brazilian university students to foster cross-cultural dialogue and engage in activities and service projects.

LOCATIONS

BrazilStudents participating in this program will have the opportunity to experience the geographical and cultural differences in Brazil and how it influences the social and economic aspects of this diverse country. The first portion of the program will be spent in the southeast region of Brazil in Sao Jose do Rio Preto, in the state of Sao Paulo. The second portion will take place in Salvador, in the northeast region of the country. The southeast of Brazil will feature a more affluent and industrialized culture, whereas the northeast will introduce students to the vibrant African and Indigenous traditions that help make Brazil so unique.

COURSES AND CREDITS

Admitted participants are required to register in three hours of Portuguese 2798.10 for May session. This course can be used to satisfy the Education Abroad Open Option GE.

ACCOMMODATIONS/COSTS

Students will be housed in modest hotels in the Sao Paulo region and wll have homestay families for the Salvador portion of the program.

Students are responsible for paying The Ohio State University tuition plus a TBD program fee. The program fee includes airfare, housing, required excursions, most meals and visa. It does not cover a passport or immunizations.

If students withdraw or become ineligible any time 11 days after the acceptance notification, they will be held responsible for a cancellation fee. Please refer to OIA's Cancellation Policy.

APPLICATION INFORMATION

Applicants must submit the Office of International Affairs Study Abroad Application online via Buckeyelink. Please note that upon application, a $150 application fee will be assessed to your Statement of Account. The application fee will be refunded only if you are not accepted or submit a written request to withdraw your application prior to the application deadline.
