Undergraduate Major in Spanish

Major Information

The Spanish major consists of a minimum of 33 credit hours distributed as indicated below. A minimum grade of "C-" in all courses counting toward the major is required. Honors students must take 3450H and fulfill additional requirements. (H) and (E) denotes Honors and Embedded Honors versions available. Non-Honors students must meet minimum GPA and pre-requisite requirements to be considered for enrollment in Honors or Embedded Honors sections.

Orientation (12 hours)

These four courses are required for all tracks:
3401(H) Advanced Grammar   
3403(H) Intermediate Spanish Composition   
3450(H) Introduction to the Study of Literature and Culture   
3404 Spanish Pronunciation   

Spanish Major Tracks (21 hours)

Students desiring to switch tracks during the major will be able to do so fairly easily, given the common core requirements of each track. However, it should be noted that the longer a student waits to switch tracks, the potentially more time-consuming such a switch will become.

Track in Iberian Literatures and Cultures

Concentration Requirement: 3 courses from Group A – 9 credits
Diversification Requirement: 2 courses from either Group B or Group C or one course from each Group – 6 credits
Senior Seminar: Spanish 5650 or Spanish 5680.02H – 3 credits
Electives: 1 course from either Group A, Group B, Group C, or Group D – 3 credits

Track in Latin American Literatures and Cultures

Concentration Requirement: 3 courses from Group B – 9 credits
Diversification Requirement: 2 courses from either Group A or Group C or one course from each Group – 6 credits
Senior Seminar: Spanish 5660 or Spanish 5680.03H – 3 credits
Electives: 1 course from either Group A, Group B, Group C, or Group D – 3 credits

Track in Hispanic Linguistics

Concentration Requirement: 3 courses from Group C, including either 3430 or 4430H – 9 credits
Diversification Requirement: 2 courses from either Group A or Group B or one course from each Group – 6 credits
Senior Seminar: Spanish 5630 or 5680.01H – 3 credits
Electives: 1 course from either Group A, Group B, Group C, or Group D – 3 credits

Track in Hispanic Studies

2 courses from one Group, plus 2 courses from another Group, plus 1 course from the remaining Group – 15 credits
Senior Seminar in one of Groups A, B, or C (pre-requisites must be met) – 3 credits
1 additional course from any of Groups A, B, or C – 3 credits

Immersion Requirement

In order to satisfy the Spanish Immersion Requirement, students must fulfill one of the following options:

  1. They must successfully complete an accredited Spanish study abroad program approved by the major/minor advisor; it must be a minimum of 5-weeks in length with at least 3 semester credit hours at the intermediate (3400) level or above; or
  2. They must have studied an academic year (at least 9 months) in a Spanish-language high-school or university; or
  3. They must document that they spent at least one calendar year abroad (12 months) in a Spanish-language immersion environment;  or
  4. They must successfully complete Spanish 5689S: Spanish in Ohio; or
  5. They must be a heritage Spanish speaker entering at the 3400-level (SLRPE exam required); or
  6. They must be a native Spanish speaker as defined by Ohio State (exempt from SLRPE exam).
  7. * Only 2 Honors embedded courses may count toward the Major program.
  8. ** Only one course in English may be counted toward the Spanish Major program.
  9. *** 4999(H), 5797, 4193 can be taken for up to 9 credit hours, but only a maximum of 3 credit hours can count toward the Spanish Major program.
