From September 28 through October 9, 2026, the Center for Latin American Studies will host Salvadoran artist Herbert de Paz on campus. De Paz is a pan-Latin American artist who lives and works between El Salvador and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). His work centers on origin and memory, focused on indigenous and Afro-diasporic territories of Central America and Brazil.

Abstract
“Art Before the Americas” is a response to traditional art history. Artistic expressions have existed on this continent for millennia and have taken the form of drawings, mural paintings, manuscripts, ceramics, metal objects, and architecture. These practices helped the peoples who created them to understand and interpret the world in which they lived, and today we can access them through archaeological evidence. This presentation proposes a study of the artistic expressions of Mesoamerica and the Andes and promotes the appreciation of this knowledge.
