06/30/11–Dr. Lilia Fernandez:
Lilia Fernandez from the Ohio State University addresses the question: What have our immigration policies been over the 20th century and how has this shaped Latin American immigration to the United States. She argues that U.S. immigration policies throughout the 20th century have made it harder for immigrants from Latin America to migrate legally, at the same time that we demand such labor and economic and social conditions in Latin America propel it. Her presentation addresses the history and effects of U.S. immigration policy, including a number of surprising facts about historical and current immigration and the contributions (un)documented immigrants make to the U.S. culturally and economically.
