CLAS to offer Haitian Creole course over the summer

CLAS is pleased to offer "Kickstart Kreyòl: Introduction to Haitian Language and Culture" in July 2025!

Kickstart Kreyòl is a four-week introductory course designed to help students build a strong foundation in Haitian Creole. Ideal for those preparing to travel, volunteer, do fieldwork, or work with Haitian communities, the class focuses on essential communication skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—all within the rich cultural context of Haiti. Spoken by over 11 million people worldwide, including nearly 1 million Haitian Americans and vibrant communities in Central Ohio, especially in Springfield and Columbus, Haitian Creole opens doors to deeper connections and understanding. Through lively, practical lessons, students will gain basic language tools and a richer appreciation of Haiti’s history, traditions, and modern-day life.

No prior knowledge of Kreyòl is required—just curiosity and an interest in language, culture, and new perspectives! The course is free and open to all individuals 18 and over. You do not need to be affiliated with Ohio State to participate.

Registration is required by June 20, 2025.
