CLAS to offer Haitian Creole courses in Summer 2026

Thanks to the success and impact of Kickstart Kreyòl: Introduction to Haitian Language and Culture in Summer 2025, we are pleased to announce we will be continuing this initiative in Summer 2026.

This summer, we will offer two classes:

Kickstart Kreyòl 1 is a four-week virtual introductory course designed to help students build a strong foundation in Haitian Creole. Ideal for those preparing to travel, volunteer, do fieldwork, or work with Haitian communities, the class focuses on essential communication skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—all within the rich cultural context of Haiti. Spoken by over 11 million people worldwide, including nearly 1 million Haitian Americans and vibrant communities in Central Ohio, especially in Springfield and Columbus, Haitian Creole opens doors to deeper connections and understanding. Through lively, practical lessons, students will gain basic language tools and a richer appreciation of Haiti’s history, traditions, and modern-day life.

Kickstart Kreyòl 2 is designed for participants who took Kickstart Kreyòl 1 in Summer 2025 and/or individuals who already have some familiarity with Haitian Creole—for example, those who have previously taken a course, have informal exposure through family or community, or can understand or use basic words and phrases (including heritage speakers). This course focuses on practicing simple conversations in real-life, everyday situations. In addition to strengthening speaking and listening skills, participants will continue building their vocabulary and grammar while deepening their cultural understanding of Haiti and its diasporas (including in Ohio). Through interactive activities, role-playing, and community-centered learning, the course supports learners in gaining confidence using Kreyòl in meaningful, practical contexts.

The schedule for this summer is:

Kickstart Kreyòl 1: July 7-30 (Tuesday and Thursday, 5-6PM)
Kickstart Kreyòl 2: July 1-29 (Wednesday, 5-6:30PM)

The course is free and open to all individuals 18 and over. You do not need to be affiliated with Ohio State to participate. Teachers can receive CEUs for actively participating in this course.

Space is limited. If you're interested and available to attend classes, please fill out the interest form below by June 1, 2026.

This initiative would not have been possible without the generous contribution from the Office of Engagement from the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio State.

Additionally, we would like to thank the co-sponsorship of the Center for Latinx Studies; the Latinx Studies Program; the Center for Languages, Literatures, and Cultures; the Department of French and Italian; and the Humanities Institute.
