Dr. Leila Vieira appointed as Assistant Director of the Center for Latin American Studies

Leila Vieira

Dr. Leila Vieira has been appointed as the Assistant Director of the Center for Latin American Studies. Dr. Vieira will assist in the overall vision and leadership of CLAS programming and outreach efforts, foster connections with partner institutions, oversee Center grant activity, and create positive synergy among Latin American Studies scholars and students, related units on campus, and the community.

Dr. Vieira joins us after serving as Portuguese language coordinator in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and Associate Director of the Center for Ethnic Studies at The Ohio State University. She holds a PhD in Latin American Literatures and cultures, and an MA in Studies of the Portuguese-Speaking World from the same institution.

Dr. Vieira has significant professional experience and personal connections in Latin America and has recently focused her efforts on K-12 outreach through the Capoeira in the Classroom project and the Brutus calavera coloring contest, as she believes it is important to promote the study of Latin American cultures to children and teenagers.  As Assistant Director, Dr. Vieira hopes to continue to support Latin Americanists in their research, pedagogy, and outreach.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Vieira in her new role as CLAS Assistant Director!
