Master of Arts in Spanish: Latin American Literatures and Cultures

The goals of this degree are:

• To provide students with the tools for the critical analysis of literature and culture or linguistics and for carrying out research in the fields of literary and cultural studies or linguistics.
• To provide students with a basis for future study and research in literature and culture or linguistics for those who qualify for and choose to enter a PhD program.
• To help students develop the skills to formulate well-organized, well-supported arguments both orally and in the form of academic papers, using stylistically effective Spanish.
• To acquaint students with the vocabulary associated with literary and cultural or linguistic analyses in Spanish and the analytical resources of diverse approaches and theories.
• To train students to teach Spanish and/or Portuguese language courses.
• To provide students with in-depth knowledge in two areas of Spanish and Spanish American literatures and cultures or Hispanic Linguistics.
• To acquaint students with other areas that comprise the field of Iberian and Latin American literatures and cultures and Hispanic Linguistics.

• Indigenous, Colonial, and National: Colonial to 1880
• Modernity, Postmodernity: Approximately 1880 to Present
