Ph.D. in Spanish: Hispanic Linguistics

The goals of this degree are:

  • To train students to design and teach Spanish and/or Portuguese language, literature and culture courses.
  • To provide students with the theoretical knowledge and methodological skills necessary for successful research in the fields of Iberian Studies, Latin American literatures and cultures or Hispanic Linguistics.
  • To acquire fluency in two research languages other than Spanish and English.
  • To develop a specific research specialization within the fields of Iberian Studies, Latin American literatures and cultures or Hispanic Linguistics.
  • To develop a secondary area of concentration and a minor area of study that complements the research specialization.
  • To undertake original research and present the findings in a dissertation.

  • Syntax and Semantics
  • Sociolinguistics and Pragmatics
  • Historical Linguistics
  • Psycholinguistics

Required Course: (All courses are SPANISH unless otherwise noted)

  • 8893 Hispanic Linguistics Colloquium**  1 credit hour 
  • **Regular enrollment in 8893 is required of all full-time students unless enrollment exceeds maximum limit

Core Courses: Students take 3 courses in one area and 3 courses in another area to fulfill Primary and Secondary Concentrations.

 

Phonetics and Phonology (the following courses are 3 credit hours)

  • 7340 Spanish Phonology and Morphology  
  • 8340 Studies in Synchronic Spanish Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology  

Syntax and Semantics

  • 8320 Studies in Synchronic Spanish Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics  3 credit hours 

Sociolinguistics and Pragmatics (the following courses are 3 credit hours)

  • 7380 Spanish Sociolinguistics  
  • 8380 Studies in Spanish Sociolinguistics  

Historical Linguistics (the following courses are 3 credit hours)

  • 7360 History of the Spanish Language  
  • 8360 Studies in Spanish Historical Linguistics  

Psycholinguistics

  • 8370 Studies in Spanish Psycholinguistics  3 credit hours 

Variable Topics Courses (which count in the different fields according to subject matter taught), (the following courses are 3 credit hours each)

  • 8330 Studies in Spanish Synchronic Linguistics  
  • 8390 Seminar in Spanish Linguistics  

Diversification: Students take 3 additional courses in linguistics, including one on the linguistic analysis of one of the required additional languages

Linguistics: Students take 3 courses in general and theoretical linguistics to complement the areas of Concentration; these courses must be taken outside the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, e.g., Department of Linguistics, Department of Philosophy, etc.

 

TOTAL: These course requirements total 36-47 graduate credit hours in fulfillment of Ph.D. requirements
