*NEW* Major in International Studies: Latin American Studies

The Latin America Studies major introduces students to the cultural, economic, historical, and political forces arising inside and outside the continent that have combined to determine the past, present, and future of Spanish‐and Portuguese‐speaking areas of the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.

Required Pre‐Major courses:  10 hours (these courses do not count in the major) Credits

  • Economics 2001.01 or 2001.02 Principles of Microeconomics 3
  • History 2120 Revolutions and Social Movements in Modern Latin America 3
  • Completion of 1103 or equivalent of an approved foreign language. 4
  • A grade of C‐ or higher is required for both pre-major and major courses. You must earn a C- or higher in all courses in your major and have a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average.

Completion of a Foreign Language Minor

  • Students must complete a foreign language minor to complete this major.
    • Choose from:  Andean & Amazonian Studies, Portuguese or Spanish.  
  • Completion of a SECOND MAJOR in Portuguese or Spanish will also satisfy this requirement.

Double Major in International Studies

Students can complete a double major in International Studies, however, you must combine an area studies major (African Studies,East Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, Middle East Studies, Slavic & East European Studies, or West European Studies) with an international issues major (Development Studies, International Relations & Diplomacy, Security & Intelligence, or World Economy & Business). Only one foreign languageminor (or major) is required to complete a double major in International Studies. The language minor (or major) must be in an approved language for the Area Studies major.
