From 5-6pm, educators will talk through the ideas from the event recording. From 6-7pm, educators will brainstorm and workshop ideas of how to use this content in the K-12 classroom. Participants will receive a  CEU/contact hour letter for .3 CEUS/3 contact hours. What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements of body movement, martial arts, music, spirituality, and popular culture.

About the Workshop

In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of Capoeira, its music, and its movements. The session will begin with a brief talk about the roots of Capoeira, and some basic elements, and concepts that make part of this art. The practical portion of the workshop will introduce participants to Capoeira movement techniques, as well as the interpretation of Capoeira music and musical instruments. Finally, the event will end with a brief capoeira circle (roda) and a demonstration. Registration is required to participate.

Recommended attire

Make sure you wear comfortable clothes and sneakers. You are also welcome to be barefoot—socks are not recommended for this workshop.

About the facilitator

Julio Beltrán playing the agogô

Julio Beltrán, also known as Beriba, started practicing Capoeira in 2008 in Quito, Ecuador, where he is originally from. In 2019, the Grupo de Capoeira Centro do Mundo conferred him the title of Formado. Julio has worked as a Capoeira teacher for kids and adults in his home country and he has also facilitated Capoeira workshops at Ohio University and the American College Dance Association Regional Conference 2022, in Athens, Ohio.

Julio has a BA in International Relations and recently obtained his Master's degree in Latin American Studies at Ohio University. For his capstone project, Julio conducted ethnographic and autobiographical research that combined his interests in Post-colonial Studies, Performance Studies, and Capoeira. He was also the first recipient of the Thomas and Anne Walker Award for his research project.

Julio is now the Administrative Assistant at the Center for Latin American Studies at The Ohio State University and is currently working on new Capoeira class projects in Columbus and Athens.
