Abstract

This talk presents a framework of indexical misrecognition (Barrett and Hall 2024), illustrating the model with examples from Latin America. Indexical misrecognition focuses on instances in which interlocutors do not share knowledge of particular indexical signs. While in some cases misrecognition occurs because of a simple lack of awareness, in other cases individuals may claim misrecognition in order to disregard or dismiss minority groups. After presenting the basic framework, it is illustrated with examples from Latin America, including research on experiences of travestis, gender identity in Indigenous languages, and the rise of anti-gender ideology in South America.
