06/30/11–Dr. Marcia Farr:

Marcia Farr from the Ohio State University discusses the connection between language and education, the various types, roles, and effects of language policies and ideologies, particularly with regard to the U.S. educational context. She concludes with a number of recommendations, including: to support heritage language maintenance and development; acknowledge the validity of vernacular language varieties, for both English and Spanish; replace the "ideology of contempt" with one of respect; and to value multilingualism over monolingualism.
