Abstract

Is it possible to question and interrupt the coloniality of power, and knowledge in language policy actions in foreign language education? How?

The language policy in Brazilian universities is developed, in many cases, through actions marked by the coloniality of power and knowledge (Maldonado-Torres, 2007; Walsh, 2010; Grosfoguel, 2016; Quijano, 2010; Mignolo, 2000), which permeate the academic environment of the global South. This is manifested not only through discourses but mainly by demands imposed by the top management of universities. In this sense, my aim in this speech is to share with the participants some epistemological reflections on processes of coloniality in demands for actions in language policy for internationalization at a Brazilian public university. I have observed these processes in the discourses of the higher administration. Additionally, I intend to present propositional reflections on how it would be possible to escape these desires marked by colonial ideals and develop other logics for proposing foreign language education. These efforts in language policy projects aim to recognize, interrogate, and interrupt the coloniality of power and knowledge (Menezes de Souza, 2021).

Bio

Dr. Adriana Brahim is a full professor at the Federal University of Paraná and works in the Graduate Program in Letters and SEPT. She is currently coordinator of Language Policies at UFPR and coordinator of the University Extension Program CAPA - Centro de Assessoria de Publicação Acadêmica. She leads the Language Education Research Group (GPELIN/DGP/CNPq) and is a coordinator at the Teachers across Borders UFPR university project.
