Work Study Student Position

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks an Associate Director (AD) to provide oversight and administration of the day-to-day operations of the Center.

Duties:
The Associate Director will have primary responsibility for implementing and supervising program development for the center;  and developing the weekly online newsletter to university affiliates and friends of CLACS. The AD is also responsible for writing grant proposals, and tracking/reporting data related to grants, and administrating the Center’s funding competitions for faculty and students. In consultation with the Director and other staff members, the AD develops programming to meet grant and fellowship Center priorities. Current grant and fellowship programs include the Title VI/National Resource Center (NRC), Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships, and Tinker Field Research Grants, other private funds, and new ones that may arise. The AD also supervises, in consultation with the Director, Center staff.


AD is responsible for advising undergraduate and graduate students, organizing and advertising university course offerings with Latin American content, and preparing paperwork associated with the Center's degree and certificate programs. The AD will work closely with departments and schools regarding curriculum, special courses, visiting scholars, speakers, and conferences.
Principal liaison with national organizations such as the Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP), and grant officers.   In collaboration with the Director, the AD manages the Center programming, grant, and fellowship budgets and attends annual local and national meetings as the representative of the Center (or representing the director).
Work with Associate Directors of other international and area studies centers along with relevant staff in IIS, LAS, and across campus on collaborative programming and other Center initiatives. Integrate activities between the Lemann Institute for Brazilian Studies and CLACS by working with Lemann staff to discuss, plan and implement joint ventures.


Perform the duties of the Director as requested and/or in the Director's absence. Occasional travel and weeknight/weekend hours required.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • PhD in Latin American Studies, Anthropology, History, or closely related social science or humanities discipline with a research focus on Latin America.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a University setting with supervisory responsibilities;
  • Professional level proficiency in English and Spanish;
  • Knowledge of PC-based tools, including Microsoft Office.

​Preferred:

  • Strong knowledge of Latin America;
  • Excellent communication, managerial, supervision and organizational skills;
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies both in and beyond the University (i.e., faculty, staff, students, and foreign visitors);
  • Superb writing skills, as well as attention to detail, multitasking capabilities, and the ability to work in an extremely fast-paced work environment;
  • Database and web experience;
  • Professional level proficiency in Portuguese.

​SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full time regular (non-tenure track) academic professional position. Proposed start date is as soon as possible after closing date. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
