CLAS launches game on Afro-Colombian music

Oi Marimbi is the first video-game for children depicting and taking place at the Colombian Pacific region. In the game, an 8-year-old boy called Marimbi is the protagonist of this adventure, in which he explores the Saija river looking for the marimba master (the marimba is a traditional Afro-Colombian musical instrument). In his journey, Marimbi learns to play various instruments used in Afro-Colombian music. Alberto Vega Rivera, MFA Candidate at Ohio State's Department of Design, worked on the development of this game, in collaboration with La Valiente Estudio, Intuitiva S.A.S., the University of Cauca, and Crea Digital in Colombia.

First launched in Spanish in 2020, the app is now available to download in English for Android and iOS devices, thanks to support by CLAS through Title VI-National Resource Center (NRC) funding. Vega Rivera shares his excitement for this new version of the game, "The new English version expands his journey to children around the globe, celebrating the richness of Afro-Colombian heritage."

This educational game is also available for music teachers across the country who will have the support to teach their students about Afro-Colombian culture and music, such as the rhythms bunde, currulao, and rumba, with engaging hands-on activities. A resource guide with activities, videos, and lesson plans can be accessed here.
