Latin American Film Festival 2024: Liberation
Join the Center for Latin American Studies, the SPPO Club, Columbus State Community College, and the City University of New York for the Autumn 2024 Latin American Film Festival. This year's theme is Liberation.
Films will be screened on campus at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays or Wednesdays at Hagerty Hall 180. Online streaming is also available (registration required). More information about registration will be posted to this page once it's made available.
NI HÉROE NI TRAIDOR (Argentina, 2024) - August 28th: Matías dreams of going to Spain to study music far from a dictatorship. His problems come down to convincing his girlfriend to meet him there and to get around his father’s opposition. But the playing field changes completely when the Falklands War breaks out and he is drafted along with his friends. Register to stream the film from August 28 through September 4.
La Yuma (Nicaragua, 2011) - September 4th: Nicaragua’s first full-length feature in 20 years, La Yuma tells the story of a young woman who dreams of transcending her bleak life in the slums of Managua by becoming a boxer. Register to stream the movie from September 4 through September 11.
Miriam Miente (Dominican Republic, 2018) - September 11th: A quinceañera celebration exposes how racial prejudices affect a teenage girl’s choices, while shooting sharp criticism at the heart and mind of Caribbean society. Register to stream the film from September 11 through September 18.
El Techo (Cuba, 2017) - September 25th: A deliciously offbeat romantic comedy from Cuba, On the Roof doesn’t shy away from tackling the problems facing contemporary youth. Register to stream the film from September 25 through October 2.
Alice Junior (Brazil, 2019) - October 1st: Alice Júnior is a celebration of rebellious youth that offers the potential for future generations to rethink outdated perspectives of gender, sexuality, and differences as a whole. Register to stream the film from October 1 through October 8.
Guaraní (Argentina/Paraguay, 2015) - October 16th: Part road movie and part coming-of-age drama, Guaraní portrays two generations of Paraguayans whose views of the world seem centuries apart. A long journey to Buenos Aires will make Atilio and Iara understand the real meaning of traditions and family bonds. Register to stream the film from October 16 through October 23.
