Dr. Elena Foulis, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, will be showcasing the oral narratives she conducted last year with Latinos/as living in Ohio at Festival Latino this summer. Her work on this project will become a new collection at the Center for Folklore Studies Archives (stay tuned to our website for more information about the video and photo gallery!). Elena's poster presentation, which will be located between the CLAS and Erie Insurance tents, include photographs and quotes from her interviewees. Dr. Foulis will also be collecting oral narratives at the festival, so spread the word!
The Oral Narratives of Latinos/as in Ohio project is a statewide initiative to collect, catalog, and preserve oral history of Latinos/as in Ohio in collaboration with the Ohio Hispanic Heritage Project and the Center for Folklore Studies. Latinos are more than restaurant owners or workers, migrant workers, or part of the labor force. Throughout this video-narrative collection it will be clear that they are fully invested in their community by way of activism, education, policy making, faith and cultural events meant to celebrate their heritage. This project is not finished; there is room for you to tell your story! It is my hope that the relationships and scholarship that comes out of this project will continue to document the past and the future of Latino life in the Midwest.
Please join us at the 2014 Festival Latino to meet the directors of the project, see existing videos, and also to tell your story! For more information contact Elena Foulis.
