On Friday, October 29th (2:20-3:40pm), Dr. Rebeka Campos-Astorkiza, together with team members Katriese DeLeon, Hugo Salgado, and Shannon Sullivan, will give a presentation entitled "Our voices/nuestras voces: Second language acquisition of Spanish sounds."
This event, sponsored by the Dept. of Spanish and Portuguese, will adopt a hybrid modality, taking place via Zoom and in person in Hagerty Hall 042.
Abstract:
In this presentation, we will learn about Our Voices/Nuestras Voces, a collaborative project that focuses on second language acquisition of pronunciation, more particularly the process of learning the sounds of second language (L2) Spanish by English native speakers (L1). Our Voices/Nuestras Voces is at its core a research enterprise, but it is also concerned with aspects of teaching, especially in terms of L2 pronunciation. In fact, we view Our Voices/Nuestras Voces as stemming from the question of how to integrate research and teaching in a way that is productive for all the stakeholders, i.e. learners and researchers.
In the presentation, we will give an overview of the project; explain how team members got involved in the project; describe the teaching component; and discuss a sample study to illustrate the research component of the project. This study will explore the acquisition of the Spanish voiced stops allophones by undergraduate students in our Spanish Phonetics class.
