The Center for Latin American Studies, The Ohio State University Brazil Gateway, and the Mershon Center for International Security Studies are pleased to invite you to the virtual talk with guest speaker Professor Andrew Janusz from the University of Florida. Janusz will discuss Brazilian democracy and the attempted coup on the recently installed government of President 'Lula'. A Q&A session will follow his presentation.
Talk Summary
In Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is back in power, but not all Brazilians are happy about it. On January 8th, thousands of supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country’s National Congress, Supreme Federal Court, and the presidential palace in an attempt to foment a coup. While the insurrection was unsuccessful, the fact that it even occurred raises new questions about the strength and stability of Brazilian democracy. Dr. Janusz's talk will explore the factors that precipitated the violent uprising, describe how the insurrection in Brasilia unfolded, and discuss the challenges and opportunities it has created for President da Silva.
