Call for Proposal Details

We invite proposals for panels, individual papers, round table discussions, interactive workshops, poster sessions, and technological tool showcases to be presented at the first International Symposium on Indigenous Languages and Cultures of Latin America (ILCLA) and the third Symposium on Teaching and Learning Indigenous Languages of Latin America (STLILLA).

Selected proceedings of the Symposium will be published in alter/nativas, revista de estudios culturales latinoamericanos.
Successful proposals will clearly indicate the relationship of the presentation to the core symposium themes. Presentations should provide an opportunity for symposium participants to engage with some of the challenging and fundamental questions at the intersection of research and the teaching and learning of Latin American indigenous languages and cultures.

Thematic tracks

  • Ethnography of indigenous languages and cultures (Intellectual, cultural, and political role of indigenous communities in Latin America; Sociocultural practices and knowledge)
  • Performance and representation of indigenous languages, cultures and identities, including film
  • Indigenous social movements and political mobilization for democracy, human rights, and alternative epistemologies (e.g. sumak kawsay)
  • Language Pedagogy (New media and technology; Distance learning / online courses; Best practices, methodologies, and strategies; Assessment and evaluation)
  • Linguistics and Socio-linguistics (Language attitudes and ideologies; Language contact and hybridity; Dialectology and standardization; Ideologies of monolingualism, bilingualism, and multilingualism)
  • Indigenous Language Revitalization and Documentation (Indigenous languages as first, second, third, foreign, heritage, and global languages; Indigenous languages as Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs); Language policy and planning; Indigenous language databases and digital archives)

Guidelines

Proposals for presentations in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, or any indigenous language of Latin America are welcomed. All proposals, regardless of type, must be sent in English, Spanish, or Portuguese, and include the following:

Name and title of the author/organizer, institutional affiliation, and contact information

Title of the proposed presentation

Abstract (300 words)

Indication of any A/V equipment needs

Proposals for panels and round table discussions must also include:

  • Name, title, and institutional affiliation for each additional participant
  • Role or proposed topic to be covered by each additional participant (150 words)
