Capoeira workshop hosted by CLAS brings together the Midwest Capoeira community in Colombus
On Saturday, October 28, the Center for Latin American Studies hosted a Capoeira workshop and a Capoeira road (circle) with Mestre Lobinho, a Capoeira master with over 25 years of experience in this art form. The event took place at the Tuttle Park Community Center, where CLAS Outreach Coordinator, Julio Beltrán, teaches capoeira classes for kids and adults every week.
Around 35 people attended the workshop, including members of the capoeira community from Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Ypsilanti, community members from the city of Columbus, and Ohio State students from the Department of Dance.
This event aimed to bring together people from the community, to create a space for capoeira practitioners to gather and interact, as well as invite community members to know a bit more about this Afro-Brazilian art form, that combines movement, martial art, music, and popular culture. The goal of this event was also to connect and continue the work that the Center for Latin American Studies is doing through the Capoeira in the Classroom Project, with K-12 institutions, as well as the Capoeira classes offered to the public.
