CLAS partnered with SLIYS this week!

High School Students watching the movie Nosotros los nobles in a lecture hall

The Center for Latin American Studies was proud to take part in the Summer Linguistics Institute for Youth Scholars (SLIYS), put on by the Department of Linguistics.  This summer program introduces high school students from around the country to the scientific study of language.  During the day, these students—most of whom enroll in the institute because of their interest in world languages—take classes on a variety of topics in the field of linguistics.  During the evenings, SLIYS organizers arrange activities for the students who are living on campus for the program.

CLAS collaborated with SLIYS to organize the evening activity for this past Tuesday, July 9th:  dinner and a screening of the Mexican comedy film Nosotros los nobles. For dinner, students ate Sí Señor! Peruvian Sandwiches in Crane Café in Hagerty Hall.  Before the screening, James Leow, our Program Assistant and Department of Spanish and Portuguese graduate student, gave an introduction on the sociolinguistics of Mexican Spanish, teaching students about the fresa and naco stereotypes portrayed in the film.  All involved—CLAS staff members included–had a great evening, and CLAS looks forward to future collaborations with OSU programs.
