Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Tara Hazel

Tara Hazel is a 2021-2022 graduate FLAS fellow studying Portuguese.

"As a student of Hispanic Linguistics, I began to study Portuguese at the undergraduate level because of its close linguistic proximity to Spanish. FLAS allows me the opportunity to continue my study of Portuguese at the graduate level and deepen my understanding of the sociocultural and linguistic factors that contribute to the Portuguese language. Through this study, I hope to gain the advanced proficiency required to conduct comprehensive research into the sociolinguistic phenomena present in the language.

In order to combine my deep passion for both teaching and research, I plan to pursue a career in academia. Through this work, I hope to positively influence the wider cultural perception of marginalized linguistic communities."
